Get back to the task

Find one useful explanation in a long recording.

You may already have the right tutorial open while working or studying. The part you need could be a spreadsheet setting, an email workflow, or an explanation from a lecture. Start with the video's spoken content, then watch the matching section in context.

When you remember the words

Use YouTube's transcript

  1. Open the transcript

Open the video on YouTube, expand its description, and select Show transcript. A transcript needs captions to be available for that video.

  2. Look for a word or phrase

Try the feature name or a phrase you remember. If your transcript panel has a search field, enter it there. Otherwise, scroll through the caption text to find the relevant lines.

  3. Jump to the matching line

Select a line in the transcript to play that part of the video. Watch the surrounding explanation to check that it answers your question.

YouTube explains this in its official transcript guide. Available controls can vary between videos and devices.

What to expect

Useful when the answer is spoken.

VideoAskable helps you revisit spoken steps in tutorials, training sessions, and lectures. Its answers depend on the captions or transcript it can access, so missing words and caption errors can affect the result.

It does not analyze video frames or read text shown on screen. A silent demonstration or an unlabeled button may need manual viewing. Private, removed, or restricted videos may not be searchable. The same applies to videos with unavailable captions.

Common questions

YouTube timestamp search FAQ

Can I search one specific YouTube video?

Yes. Include its YouTube link in your question and choose Find moment. This is useful when you already have the tutorial and only need one part of it.

Can VideoAskable search without a link?

Yes. It can look for a relevant public YouTube video from a question. Include the link when you want to search a particular recording.

Does VideoAskable analyze what appears on screen?

No. It uses captions or transcripts of spoken content. It cannot find information that appears only on screen.

What if YouTube has no transcript for the video?

Check whether captions are available. If VideoAskable cannot obtain usable captions either, it cannot reliably answer from that video. Try another captioned source or watch the relevant section yourself.
